John Cleese to debut Fawlty Towers Live in Australia because Brits don’t like him

There’s a very good reason the live stage show of Fawlty Towers will have its world premiere in Australia – and that is because it’s not England. “The British press doesn’t like me very much,” says John Cleese, who is adapting the TV series he co-wrote (with then-wife Connie Booth) and starred in for two brief but hugely influential seasons in 1975 and 1979. “I don’t think I would have got very good reviews [in London].”

JOHN Cleese has shunned the UK and will open his Fawlty Towers stage show in Australia, saying he believed he would find a more welcoming audience here.

The comedy legend said he thought the British media would be too harsh on the live remake of his hit ’70s TV show “because they dislike me very much”.

“I would be very careful about bringing anything into the West End until it had achieved some success somewhere else,” he said.

DURING auditions for the Fawlty Towers live stage show John Cleese saw a lot of great actors who looked and behaved just like Basil — so he showed them the door.

“I liked (Stephen Hall) because he is different from how I am, I love the fact he doesn’t look like Basil because it already makes it more interesting,” Cleese said yesterday, hours after landing in Sydney to oversee the last rehearsals before the show opens next week.

BASIL’S BACK From screen to stage… Fawlty Towers Live is faultless fun

IN the best traditions of great British comedy, madcap hotel owner Basil Fawlty is back – and making audiences laugh all over again.

The much-loved calamitous cast of characters of Basil, his stern gossipy missus Sybil, pretty Polly the much put upon chambermaid and, of course, loveable mystified Manuel – who still knows nothing because he’s from “Barthelona” – have returned larger than life.

How great is this? I found it funnier than the TV show. The timing is exhilarating: The element of “bedroom farce” is perfectly realised, and if entries, exits, and pauses were Olympic events then this Cast and Director would be gold medallists. My only complaint is that I missed some of the lines because I was laughing so hard.
